I've had this product for two years now and it still brews a great cup off coffee. I agree with the other reviewers about the spillage. I finally just gave up and I use a plastic cup to fill the reservoir with water instead of the carafe. I use bottled water because our tap water makes the coffee taste gross. When I pour my coffee, I pour it slowly and keep a paper towel handy. I am actually looking to buy one for my office but I was surprised to see that the retail price is almost double what I paid for mine! I will be shopping for a used one.

The total volume is 16 ounces (two cups). This is okay. I don't like drinking old over-warmed coffee, anyway.

The automatic shutoff doesn't allow for over-warmed coffee or burned out elements. The stainless steel carafe means less glass carafe breakage and replacement hassle. I have had it for just a coupe weeks.

Even though the plastic lid over the pot seems a little fragile and a little complicated, the DCC "4"-Cup is a good value.

As everyone else said already, this peice spills coffee all over, and then turns itself off. 30 minutes is basically 15 minutes of brewing, then 15 minutes of you drinking your first cup then coming back to a luke-warm second cup and spilling it all over again because even though you thought you have it figured out, it still spills. It depends on what a "cup" is... - Lauren -
While there is no concurrence in the coffee industry as to what a "cup" is, Villaware has the smallest notion of a cup I have yet encountered. This model is represented as a 4-cup espresso maker, but it actually makes only 4 ounces. Using a 2-ounce demi-tasse as a reasonable measure, the model would be properly represented as a 2-cup espresso maker. Were espresso makers rated by their capacity in ounces, rather than cups, I would not have ordered it. As it was, I ordered and promptly returned it. My compliments to Amazon for making it simple.

In addition to its small size, the item is poorly made. The edge of the lid is razor sharp, and, in fact, it cut my hand.

I ordered this espresso maker because I thought it would be best to replace my aluminum one with stainless steel. But I would prefer to continue using my aluminum Bialetti to putting up with the poor quality of this cheapie. I don't think enough of Villaware's workmanship to spend more to get the 6-cup, which presumably holds 6 ounces.

My Bialetti 4-cup stovetop espresso maker makes 8 delicious ounces of perfect espresso, and until something really superior comes along, it's a keeper.

What drove me in getting this make ? frustration, that is in getting yet another 4 Cup Brewer that can't produce a Hot cup of coffee, so far was a Black & Decker and Cuisinart 4-Cup makers, both only made coffee at 163 degs believe me not hot enough, I used to drink it black with sugar now I am back to extra half / half, add that from the refrig one can lose 20 degs, in heat so starting off with a weak heating coffee maker then add cream one is at approx 140 degs ! now it's a re-heat in a microwave that is a extra dirty cup, I use double wall SS 15oz travel cup.

At last I didn't think I would find any coffee maker that made a higher temperature since my favorite Braun 4 Cup Coffee Maker # KF-12, 179 degs, add cold cream no problem out the door.

The stats
This model is very well made, it doesn't slide when pushing the on or off switch, it has no programmable controls, no problem at all with me, ever since I heard of a employee I worked with left his coffee brewer plug-in and his kitchen burnt down, I pull the plug ! it comes with the latest feature to get an advance cup or pause 'n serve cup, a feature I detest, since IMO only a ignorant person would do that because he/she can't wait a few extra mins, till it's all done, this person gets the "extra strong" cup and the rest is diluted left over, I was just reminded (she dose that : ) she likes the pause 'n serve because it's a safety feature she seen what happens at work to a lot of people getting coffee for customers when some one pulls the coffee pot out early and gets a hot splash, ok, ok that's different than some one who just can't wait, ok it's a safety feature : )

I ordered it with a stainless steel carafe, I am personally not a big fan of SS carafes, I like to see what is going on : - )) could only get a "fits all" replacement S.S. for my Braun (brews,179 degs) but with this one I now have a battle ready carafe as a spare when needed, yes I have ordered a HB glass carafe, but speaking about this S.S. carafe this is no doubt the best pouring carafe I ever used, bar-none, it is an issue with most 4 cup carafes believe me, even with my blessed Braun you have to be just right (read level and slow) in pouring, this carafe never leaked a drop of coffee out after pouring many times (start an stopping) in testing fast or slow and all of the coffee but the smallest drop came out of the carafe in the end, I just hope the glass one I ordered will work half as well, hopefully will update.

As for the taste ? I read reviews on this non-commercial model (here) and some stated it brews a little weaker no doubt because of the round filter design instead of the V shape which does make sense, well I am drawn a bit by this, to me it seems that its only a tiniest bit true, but by very little, I make my coffee 6 oz standard coffee cup with one level teaspoon (measuring spoon) for a 4 cup, I use 3 level tablespoons and 1 half tablespoon, I am use to my Braun maker taste, using the HB I have to guess it was a tad lighter tasting but the jury is still out on this, no big deal I will try using 4 level tablespoons if I decide it is a little weaker. One too two "level" measuring tablespoons is the standard for a standard 6 oz cup of coffee. BTW- this S.S. carafe makes / holds 20 oz as dose my Braun or one good travel mug, I don't believe there are any true 6 oz (4) cup, 24 oz makers out there, will see how much difference if any, the glass carafe will hold.

Ok the first brew after the first just water brew run, the temperature was an amazing 184 degs !! finally a maker who makes a cup of hot coffee the right temperature, instead of the typical coffee makers whos legal staff are running the design department.

Pros

A great hot cup of (184 degs) coffee with an automatic shut off, one hour instead of the typical 20 mins ones out there, the timer works and the temperature was 181 degs just before the time of shut off so the warmer keeps up with the brewer temp, over all height is 11", standard store brought 4 cup round filters work perfectly and a nice blue indicating on light, you know when this unit is done brewing by the littlest burst of final steam out the top sides, a little less than 7 minutes. .

Cons (To some)

Round filter basket design, not the V shape # 2 filter type, yes a small amount of liquid drops when after brewing swinging out the basket, either wait longer to open or have a paper towel ready.
Some people will not like the "how too" graphics on the top lid, remember this review is on the "Commercial" product made for motels / hotels, read heavy duty, the cord is a 3 prong 47" long to the end not the typical 18 inches or less cord, these both things are not a problem with me.

The only reason I ordered this unit was, I wanted one that would at least last as long as my Braun (still does work) first one '89 to 2003 (glass carafe broke) second one new 2003 to present (but with a fits-all S.S. carafe) can not get an original glass carafe for this unit, this new unit goes up to my girl friends place.

Just like this one and it has really great reviews like the "Hot coffee" but I was thinking how long will this unit last, that was my driving force so I'll live with the graphs and longer cord, in thinking now yes the difference is most likely just the length of cord and it's 3-prong, (only time will tell ) if you need a longer cord for a coffee maker and don't want to use an (10 amp rated min) extension cord, this model is for you, I have no regrets with this unit and just love buying form Amazon, 9 out of 10 times dose have the best price and shipping, I think their service is great if I ever do find a tiny price difference, I will, way it out, who is doing the selling at the other end ?, is it worth taking a chance ?, in the end it's, no.

It pours just like the S.S. carafe great and it holds 4 oz more

This coffee maker died after about three weeks. It overflowed twice while brewing and even after cleaning, still didn't work. It made the coffee hot enough alright--enough to burn my hand when I tried to stop it from overflowing and making a huge mess. It went right into the trash. The carafe is cheap and the heating element made the coffee taste burnt even if left for 10 minutes after brewing (when it worked!). Save yourself the money and try something else!

I'd never heard of K-cups when I ran into the
Keurig B66 in Costco. At [...]with 90 K-cups,
I figured it was worth a try. As a bit of a coffee snob
(longtime "Peetnik" who finds Starbucks a little too weak)
I'd avoided systems like
Senseo because I figured that they wouldn't brew
coffee as strong as I like it. And that WAS my experience
with the Keurig, too: The sample K-cups were okay,
but--unless brewed on the tiny 5.25 oz setting--
far too weak for my taste. Again, let me stress,
MY personal taste is for coffee stronger than probably
95% of Americans, so take that into account.

Cons: Even after trying the K-cups recommended by
others who say they prefer strong coffee
(Emeril's "Big Easy Bold," Coffee People's "Donut Shop Coffee,"
"Black Tiger" & "Wake Up", Timothy's "Midnight Magic"
& "Rainforest Espresso," and so on, I'm still having
trouble finding a stiff cup of Joe brewed at 7.25 oz.
Also, they haven't developed an environmentally friendly
K-cup yet. Damn! And it's pricey, by home coffee maker standards.

Pros: Clean-up...there really is none! This format is the
fastest, easiest, most trouble-free way to get a quick cup
of decent coffee. I'm in Bachelor Heaven! I brew whenever
I feel like it--'cause it's so easy--and never waste excess coffee.
I will never resort to instant, so this is a wonderful compromise:
It ain't french press coffee, folks, but it's pretty good and ridiculously easy.
Two or more folks can enjoy entirely different coffees at virtually
the same time.
Also, this package does include a device for using your own
coffee: after continuing to audition K-cups, I may eventually
resort to stuffing it with some quality Peet's coffee, here and there.
Also, there's a ton of different types of coffee, cocoa and tea for
this available at decent prices on Amazon
(some people consider ~44 cents a serving expensive, but I'm used to
paying for quality coffee--and not pushing for that many cups out of a pound
--so K-cups at ~$[...] for 48 cups (no tax or shipping) seems modest to ME.

From what I'm told, the B60 is the closest model for comparison...
both have 3 sizes (5.25 oz, 7.25 oz & 9.25 oz). I've heard another
Keurig model offers a 11.25 oz option, but given that I'm having
trouble finding something strong enough at 7.25, 11.25 seems laughable.
I'm using Brita water, for what it's worth, and have only had the
machine for about a month, so I can't yet speak to its durability.
It vibrates a bit and makes a little noise. Neither bothered me,
but I can see that if one person was up, making coffee, a light
sleeper in a nearby room might notice the sound.

Here's a tip: A company called Kenoza[...]
offers single cup purchases. I know the 90 cups that mine came with
sound like a lot, but I immediately realized I needed the strongest
options, so went to Kenoza and got 2 or 3 samples (at 46 cents each)
of many of the strongest ("Extra Bold" is the K-cup jargon)...coffees;
far better than blindly buying 48 cups of something you may hate!

So, in summary, at [...] with 90 K-cups I think it's a freakin'
bargain. Obviously, the more you have to pay, the less spectacular
the deal. Drinkable coffee--no one's going to mistake it for Peet's
in a french press--but it's better than instant and some regular drip
coffee makers. If you like a variety of coffees, and don't care if
it's strong, run, don't walk, to the Keurig...and the lack of clean-up
is AWESOME!

I bought this on a recommendation from my Daughter. It is one of the best purchases I have ever made. My wife and I simply love it. We each have a cup of different flavored coffee every morning without having to make a whole pot and wasting half of it and forcing the other person to drink the same as you. The individual cups are a little more costly but worth it. The ease of changing from coffee to tea to hot chocolate is great. If I decide as I did tonight at about 9 PM that I would like a cup of coffee, I plop in a K cup and a few seconds later I'm enjoying a cup of my favorite java. I would highly recommend this to anyone that is a coffee drinker, especially if you enjoy the different flavored or blended coffees.

I recently asked for a cup of joe at a friend's house and they showed me their Keurig B60. They let me pick my own flavor and showed me how easy it was to make a cup of coffee with it. I was amazed at how fast this gourmet coffee was ready and how little there was to do for clean up. When I got home I researched it.

The only differences between the B60 and B66 is the color of the machine and quantity of sample K-Cups. The B60 is almost all black with a chrome handle while this B66 has a black body, silver top and chrome handle. The B60 gives you the standard 18 pack K-Cup sample, while the B66 gives you an additional 4 18-packs of samples AND a reusable "My K-Cup". The My K-Cup is a reusable filter you can put your own coffee in if you really want to (kind of defeats the purpose).

After using both the B60 and B66 I can tell you they both work EXACTLY the same. Any review you see for B60 has the same features, benefits, and shortfalls as the B66.

I'm the only coffee drinker in my house so it became a big pain to measure out beans, grind them, empty them from the grinder into the coffee maker, add the water, then wait for the coffee. Plus when you're done you have to discard the used filter / grounds and any left over coffee and clean the carafe and maybe the drip mechanism as well.

THE KEURIG IS ALMOST 100% MAINTENANCE / CLEANING FREE. It has a 48 oz water reservoir so you don't need to refill daily. The cleanup is just taking the used K-Cup and throwing it out. There's no grinding of beans or cleaning necessary and I don't have to spend 1/2 an hour to make 2 cups of coffee.

Some other nice benefits are that it also makes tea, hot cocoa and plain ole hot water (for Ramen or other uses). It also has a cool blue LED and blue lit water tank. The auto-on and off features help you save time and money. The 90 K-Cups the B66 gives you should last a long time and help you decide which blend of coffee(s) you prefer most. The water reservoir is also dishwasher safe.

The cons are few and far between. It is noisy when it starts and finishes making a cup of coffee. The water intake makes a loud vibrating noise when it pumps water in or out of the internal reservoir. This doesn't bother me, my wife, or my infant son. The strength of the 9.25 oz versus the 5.25 ounce cup is diminished. It's just the amount of water being used on the same amount of grounds. So if you want a regular 9.25 oz coffee you should probably use a strong K-Cup. Refill K-Cups are somewhat expensive, but it's WAY less then a gourmet coffee shop. If you look around and use coupons it's a great way to save.

I've had the coffee maker for 3 days now and I couldn't be prouder of my purchase. I look forward to my daily coffee finally!

One last note, if you're going through a carafe or more of coffee a day, you may want to think about whether or not it's a cost savings or worth the time savings for you. But for me, this is the best product I've come across in a while.

I purchased this coffee pot from some local store when I first came down to my new city of Columbia for school. As my first coffee pot I didn't really know what to expect so I put my grounds in, plugged it in and enjoyed a first delicious cup. It is small, it fits well on a desk and despite what many will tell you makes the best cup of coffee not just for the value, but among many other more expensive options as well. I didn't realize this until someone broke my carafe and I had to borrow another coffee maker for a while. Don't be fooled by the price tag, price does not dictate quality. Either way if you want a great cup of coffee for a nice price, need the space, and like me think that 4 cup coffee makers are quaint then look no further.

I really enjoy this coffee maker. It's the perfect size for me. It makes 4 cups of 5 oz cups of coffee, so if you're like most people this really only makes about 2 nice sized cups of coffee, which is great for me, because I hate to have old coffee or to waste it. This is a great size for an office, apartment, college dorm, or if you don't drink very much coffee. It brews perfectly each time I use it; however, I have not used the programming feature yet since brewing only takes about 2 minutes.

Alot of times this coffee maker works fine, but it's by chance. The directions say place the coffee basket in securely before brewing the coffee. And IT DOES fit in securely as long as there isnt a coffee pot in place. As soon as the coffee pot is set under the basket it wobbles around and it "lifts" up some from the spot it should be in. Sometimes thats fine, then sometimes you go to get coffee and you find all the coffee grounds all over the coffee pot and counterspace. A big mess on occasion. I've had Mr Coffee's before and never seen this problems, so maybe I just got a lemon.

I was looking forward to this style of four cup coffeepot as far as ease of use. The product is very flimsy and has been trouble since day one. The swing basket often comes off it's pins and the inner basket is difficult to remove. Definitely not worth the price! There are cheaper alternatives to making a small pot of coffee.

I normally do not write reviews, but had to put in my two cents for this wonderful little coffee maker. After going through 2 Mr. Coffee four cup coffee makers in the last three years, it was time to try something new. I'll drink as much coffee as I make so I've had to limit myself to smaller coffee makers. Of the limited choices available, I decided to buy this one based on all of the excellent reviews. This coffee maker, other than not being red, has been spectacular. From the removable water reservoir to the conical filtering, it makes a consistently excellent cup of coffee. Clean up is a snap and the design looks great. So far, this coffee maker has been flawless.

Got mine direct from the makers who provide them for the show. I called first to make sure they are safe. Was told on the phone they ARE from China but tested safe. Yet, found out on the CBS Television website that they contain lead & cadmium etc etc who who knows how safe OR unsafe they are!
They ARE gorgeous and cheap if bought from correct source. Handles are comfortable and never hot but the cup body itself does heat. GREAT cups if they don't kill me.....There are 3 different color combos I know of. I have this color in my 1st set.

I bought this coffeemaker 2 years ago for my office, and it's still going strong. It's easy to use, easy to clean, and reliable. It makes coffee hot (unlike some that make it just warm), and has room enough in the basket to make it good and strong (I usually use 2.5T coffee per mug but could double that). I'm drinking a mug of fresh coffee from it right now. Even the mug is good, as I've had too many travel mugs that didn't seal properly at the lid and would end up dribbling down my chin, but this one is nice and snug and stays put. No muss, no fuss.

The reasons I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 are that 1) if you fill the mug all the way to the top to fill the water basin, you will have spillage (leave about 1/2" space from top and you're fine), and 2) if your mug isn't positioned properly, you may find yourself brewing onto your counter or desk as there's no brew-pause or other switch to indicate to the coffeemaker that the mug isn't positioned right.

The idea of a single cup maker, at an inexpensive price, was motivation for my young daughter to purchase this as a Christmas gift. It worked for one cup of coffee on Christmas morning and would never turn on again. After an extensive wait period at the 800 number supplied for any type of warranty I learned that it would cost .50 check, cut the plug off, purcase a mailing package and mail it to the Ohio address at unknown cost for the certified mailing. They would mail anoter unit back. No refund for the return expenses and of course no guarantee the new one would last any longer than one use. Thus a replacement unit plus the original purchase would be nearly a double cost and not worth the time. This is an awesome little coffee maker in a tiny package.
I've had a large Gevalia coffee maker as well as a Senseo single serve coffee pod maker, and while this brewer doesn't quite match up to the Senseo, it definitely does a good job and makes a good hot cup of coffee.
I don't know why it got such low reviews, perhaps people wanted more for the money they paid, but in all honesty, it is an amazing little bargain of a coffee pot for the money. (Though I must admit I got it for about at Target.)
I love that I can program it and have my coffee ready for me in the morning as well as know that if I forget to turn it off in the morning, it has the auto-off safety feature.
It makes just the right amount of coffee (I use paper 16 oz Insulair cups with coffee lids) so I can have a cup in the morning and I can top off right before I leave the house. The coffee is piping hot, and I have to wait a while to let it cool before I take my first sip. The heating base keeps the coffee at the perfect temperature between cups. (Not sure why others said the temp was too low?) On the weekends it's great for splitting the coffee between two for breakfast. :) Unless you use aLOT of milk, it should be hot enough; I suppose if you want to go Latte, you might be better off putting some milk in the carafe before brewing so the base can help get it heated up.?
I also use this machine to heat up my water when I want to make a cup of tea (or cup of noodles, etc.). I've also brewed tea with the bags in the carafe, but haven't yet tried to brew straight leaves, which may be nice. I use paper filters as this one didn't come with a permanent filter, and I've actually found that it's much more convenient to use paper since I just have to toss it in the trash and don't have to worry about cleaning the permanent filter.
This machine is lightweight (which I like), but it doesn't feel cheap. The carafe is lightweight when empty, but sturdy. I've been using mine about twice a day for the past six months and the handle is still very sturdy (I think the guy who had the handle fall off just got a bad one.) The base does slide a bit when you try to push the buttons, but all you have to do is push down on the top of the machine while you're setting it; not sure why others complained about that so much? If you really want it to stay in place, you could try using one of those non-skid rubber mats underneath?
I'm giving this 4 stars only because it doesn't match up to the Senseo (which costs ) since that machine uses turbulence to create a nice frothy-fresh cup each time, then again the single serve pods are a lot more expensive and it has a weird round base design which takes up more counter space...so I'd probably give that one 4.5 stars. The Black & Decker is about on par with the standard Gevalia I used, since that one was a basic brewer, but the larger insulated carafe was harder to clean and was also a lot more capacity than I needed.
When I was looking for a new coffee maker, my requirements were that it have a timer, be a 4-5 cup machine, and be a good price (-). I compared it to the Mr. Coffee 4-cup glass carafe coffee maker. This one won because it was a lil larger, the carafe looked sturdier, and I liked the lid and closed design of the carafe as compared to the cheaper, more open glass carafe on the Mr. Coffee which might also crack/break.

I thought of Black & Decker as more of a power tool company, and thought this machine would be sturdy and reliable. So far, it has totally reached my expectations and I will definitely buy more home appliances from them in the future.

I came online to verify the carafe was stainless steel and not seeping into my coffee/water and I wound up writing a long defense of my lil coffeemaker. Obviously I love it...!

ALL IN ALL, A GREAT BARGAIN COFFEE MAKER WITH GREAT FEATURES FOR THE PRICE. Just realize you're getting a good standard coffee maker and not one of the - machines that are bigger and heavier.

All the B&D coffee makers are junk - at least all I've used or heard about. The one I have stops intermittently during the brew cycle, the rim on the hot plate cracked after just 1 month, you have to use more coffee than with other coffee makers and it takes about 12 minutes to make 6 cups of coffee.

The automatic shutoff doesn't allow for over-warmed coffee or burned out elements. The stainless steel carafe means less glass carafe breakage and replacement hassle. I have had it for just a coupe weeks.

Even though the plastic lid over the pot seems a little fragile and a little complicated, the DCC "4"-Cup is a good value.

This works VERY well to make a strong coffee that is more intense than that from any drip or press coffee maker but not so powerful as a big high pressure espresso machine in a cafe. Somewhere in between - but quite nice and inexpensive for the home. Cleans up easily. These are made in India (probably by guys sitting with hammers on the sidwalk) so may vary a bit sample to sample.

The only problem is the rubber seal ring - this gradually wears out and if you don't find an original Bialetti replacement, it can leak steam no matter how hard you gorilla down the threads.

I love this little machine! I purchased the first one in 2004 after reading excellent reviews on the "crema" quality. We've used this machine everyday for the last 5 years and look forward to it every morning. I'm an Americano drinker and have found the way to get the strongest, smoothest flavor from this machine is to pull a double shot, then add half an inch of boiling water, then cream. Delicious! Here in Seattle, I use local Lighthouse Roasters or Longbeach Roasters coffee beans at home. The freshness of these high quality coffees makes our home espresso drinks as good as we'd get at a cafe. The second machine I just bought today is for the office, where I've been spending way too much money running to the corner cafe for coffee in the afternoon. Since I purchased our first machine 5 years ago, the price of this unit has dropped by half (I paid for the first one). I'm hoping the popularity of the machine has allowed DeLonghi to drop the price and not the quality.

Side Note: I have never used the frothing wand on this machine and have heard the milk steaming/frothing capacity is low. The steam pressure, in relation to coffee quality, creates the most flavorful shots the first 2 runs. Give the machine a break of 10 minutes or so before turning on another steam cycle. For us at home, this is the amount of time it takes to drink our first cup, so the timing works out perfectly.

The build quality of this model is amazing. I just purchased a similar Mr. Coffee model which is cheaply built. It broke and I had to return it. This DeLonghi feels solid. Only problem is that it is almost impossible to froth milk with it. If they could make the frothing mechanism more flexible like the Breville models, put it higher up, this would be amazing... I'm really sad I had to return it. I could see that this would be OK if you have a nice frothing beaker that is fairly small, but otherwise, I would not recommend this product. I hope they read amazon reviews.

In over five years of transactions with Amazon, I've not been this disappointed at all. I ordered the stainless steel product displayed, but I kept receiving the aluminum product. This happened three times though I returned the merchandise with my reason clearly explained. I guess it's the age of machines for if a human eye had read my reason, there was no way s/he could have sent me the aluminum expresso maker three times.

On balance, this is just a small event in my overall relationship as a customer, which I can certainly overlook. However, Amazon should look into this matter because even for them, this business plan is not at all efficient. Amazon incurred six shipping charges and didn't even make the sale.

This machine makes decent espresso, but has many design flaws. The carafe is difficult to clean, due to a narrow opening and wide bottom. The top where you put the water in is difficult to unscrew, especially if your hands are even a little bit wet, because it is smooth, with smooth ridges that do nothing to help grip it. About the third time I used it, my son told me it was leaking as he sat nearby eating his cereal, I thought it was just the steam escaping, but when I watched next time, a fair amount of water was squirting out from where the filter basket attaches to the machine, before it even reached the coffee...good thing there is a removable drip tray to catch all the water. Enough gets through to make the espresso, but I worry that it will get worse. Also, every third run or so, the machine makes a very sudden, loud noise...I thought it was my smoke alarm going off the first time! It doesn't last very long, but it would wake up the house if anyone else were sleeping still. My old Krupps was much better, I had it for 11 years before the seal gave out.

The quality is just 'ok' as it is made in India rather than Italy and you can easily see it when you unpack it. The handle feels a bit cheap, the lid also looks like it could break if you ain't careful and the metal also has some defects.

But for the price it is rather excellent at what it does, which are espressos. You just fill it up with water, add you favorite coffee and in less than 5 minutes you are done!

If you do it properly the espresso it produces is great and you save quite a bit of money by avoiding the expensive options. And since I'm using it only for my personal morning and evening cups of cappuccino I don't see the point on spending 0 to 0 dollars on a big machine.

You are better of using that money on getting a high quality grinder, gourment coffee grains and some very nice Italian coffee cups or glasses.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS COFFEEMAKER!!

I had chosen this coffeemaker because of the design (goes with the other stainless kitchen appliances) and that it is made by Cuisinart, which I thought makes good appliances. This coffeemaker has worked "perfectly" for me only twice out of about 8 tries, after which I gave up. It's sitting (pretty) on my counter but will only be used as a back-up.

The carafe tends to dribble when the water is poured into the reservoir and when I pour the coffee! If you hold the carafe "just right" (I haven't quite figured out what that is) it won't dribble. Too much trouble! I want to just pour my coffee!!

Another drawback, IMO, is that the coffee basket is basically pointed so you can't set it on the counter to pour your coffee grounds into the filter because it tips onto its side. This is troublesome for me because I grind my beans and usually pour the grounds directly from the grinder. Twice I've had the grinds go over the sides of the filter and make a mess. I suppose I could've spooned the grinds in, but it's actually hard to spoon coffee grinds out of the grinder with the blade in the middle of things.

Another feature that's supposed to be an asset is that it automatically shuts off after 30 minutes. My pattern in the morning is to make coffee, take a shower, pour my first cup, do other things, and then come back for the 2nd cup, which I would like to be hot. Nope! This baby shuts off and the coffee cools down real fast!!

I have heard better reviews by friends of Mr. Coffees!!

I am back to using my French press.

Get the Elite instead - Tony - Moorpark, CA United States
This is basically the same brewer as the Elite Quisine 4 cup brewer which you can buy here at Amazon. The same manufacturer must make both for different companies. One says "Elite" and the other says "Continental" but they are clones. Both are so inexpensive I got one of each, in case I need a spare. As inexpensive as they are, I don't know how long they will last. This one seems to have a slightly lower brewing temperature than the Elite Quisine and the caraf doesn't have calibrations for the amount of coffee that the Elite has. This one is also a lot cheaper. I paid only .00 and now it is down to and change. The Elite is 19.95.

My only real criticism of this one is that the brewing temperature could be hotter, as the other brewer is. I measured the temperature in the pot on this at 179 degrees Farenheit but that is after the water soaks through the beans and drips through the air about 6 inches. The Elite temps out at 185 in the pot. It tastes hotter too.

If you buy this one, or the other for that matter, I would recommend one of those double walled Bodum mugs you can get at Starbucks (don't have those shipped or they will arrive broken half of the time.) This will keep your coffee warmer longer but I wouldn't take to long to drink it lest it not be hot enough for you.

Addendum to 5 star review:

I bought it in July and by August the coating was peeling from the bottom of the kettle. I contacted customer service via the email through their website. Customer service was excellent and I received a replacement quickly.

Apparently, this is the first they've heard of such a problem.

If there is a defect, be prepared to pay for shipping and handling for returns. It adds eleven or more dollars to the price. I don't feel the customer should pay anything additional for a manufacture defect.
I hope my new kettle has no problems.

Earlier review:

Tea strength is adjusted by how much tea is used. It percolates (boiling temperature) water through the filter tray (two different mesh baskets included-one is a finer mesh). The temperature of the water makes a big difference in taste. It does a good job with both bagged and loose teas as well as herbals. I used some of my higher quality (i.e. more expensive teas) and the results were good. Just know your tea and how much to put in. Remember to put it on "warm" mode once it's made the tea. It does a thirty second reheat without steeping the tea again. I wouldn't let tea sit for more than an hour or more. I did it and the tea was a bit stronger. Just like coffee sitting in a pot too long, tea is best when fresh.

Safety wise, it's a winner for me. I have kids, so no boiling kettle to worry about. If you don't have kids, no worry about a kettle boiling dry. This tea maker has a safety shut off.

I LOVE that it is cordless.

Getting the basket into the carafe can be tricky at first, but I've gotten the hang of it. You have to line up the baskets with the carafe near the handle and then the stem connects to the bottom.

I should have listened to some other reviewers. I wanted a replacement for my ever-leaking Zarafina. This isn't it. It is a cheaply made percolator with a bell and a whistle. The only adjustment you can make is the amount of tea you place in the basket and with full leaf tea it is almost impossible to determine. Don't waste your money.

This is a great espresso machine if you are on a budget or just starting to make your own espresso drinks. However you get what you pay for, within a month (maybe two months) of use, the handle broke off on the filter, but it still works, so my husband and I have managed to work around it.

We are big iced mocha drinkers, so we haven't really used the steamer yet.

I agree with some of the other reviewers, that it does take awhile for it to start brewing the espresso.

But we've use it pretty much everyday for the last 5 months and it is been a good purchase.

We purchased this product from a local shop, relying on the venerable Krups name and the excellent price to steer our decision. This was a horrible mistake. The inner workings of the machine contain a plastic called butyl - it is food grade of course [i.e., non-toxic], but it is a particularly odious product. Opening the reservoir causes the acrid smell to assault your nose, and actually using the machine will guarantee that this terrible emanation fills the entire kitchen. We've tried every conceivable method of mitigating this awful scent, which also flavors the espresso produced with a unique, disturbing, artificial taste, and nothing is effective. In short this constitutes a profound design flaw, and I would strenuously recommend that anyone considering this product stay away. In fact, if zero stars were an option I would have rated it as such. You might have a better experience, but with so many other good products out there, it hardly seems worth the fifty dollar gamble.

Two failed from faulty switches - What4 - Florida
We've owned two of these. Both failed for the same reason: a faulty switch.

I took the second one apart (not easy) to see what the problem was. The rotary switch that changes it from coffee to steam has an inherent weakness. In one position, it has a little projecting plastic part that does not fully press the electrical switch that turns on the boiler.

It looks like a design defect.

Unlike some others, we liked the coffee made by this machine. While it lasted.

The B&D Smartbrew coffee maker has proven to be a reliable standard fare drip coffee maker with timer. It makes a good pot of coffee consistently and easily for a great price - and that comes from a daily coffee drinker. It also looks fine in a kitchen with stainless+black appliances although it has no stainless finish on it - just black.

The REALLY GREAT THING about this coffee maker is that I no longer dribble coffee all over my countertop trying to pour a cup, or water all over the place trying to fill the maker. There is no comparison. This is 20 bucks or less, and brews GREAT COFFEE that you buy FRESHLY ground from the store (and price) of your choice.

The Keurigs are a hundred bucks and higher, and you have to buy their coffee that's been sitting there for lord knows how long, even though the date says its good until ??

Im sure the Keurigs make good coffee also, but it ain't that much better that would make me pay 5 times the price for a cup of coffee, and 5 times the price for the coffeemaker.

Besides, Keurig might have "200" flavors of coffee, but realistically, how many of those are you really gonna drink?

The neighborhood store of your choice already knows what coffee flavors tastes good, and you can grind it there yourself. As the choices at your store are already Light, Dark, French Roast, Hazelnut, Amaretto, and a few others, what more do you really need. I'll take the B & D DCM18 any day of the week.

This coffee maker is sturdy. Under heavy use it doesn't have a glitch. Heats water very quickly. Makes nice coffee and tea. It's small size is an advantage. You don't really spill when adding water. It does not fit most of the containers but you can still fit them at an angle. Make sure they don't slide though. Perfect for mugs even the tall ones.

This machine does the trick. I bought it to brew espresso so I could recreate Starbucks's vanilla latte and save myself a day. I'm not picky about coffee and I had never made espresso before; this product made the process relatively painless for me. I use it with Starbucks brand espresso, Starbucks vanilla syrup, and vanilla flavored soy milk. Still haven't figured out how to use the steam wand though, but I think that's just due to my lack of experience with this type of machine. Still, the instructions should be more clear in terms of making steam. (I don't know what I did wrong but when I tried to steam milk the steam wand sucked the milk in instead of blowing steam out. I then had to clean the inside of the machine with vinegar. So now I am afraid of the steam wand and I've been microwaving my milk.)

My old 4-cup Mr. Coffee was a decent little coffeemaker and it lasted for about three years before it started to give me trouble. Technically it still works but the coffee it brews is only warm, not hot. So I decided it was time for a new machine.

I did a lot of research, and the fact of the matter is that there just aren't many good quality 4-cup coffeemakers on the market. I researched the models from Mr. Coffee, Cuisinart, and Black & Decker, and none of them got particularly good reviews. I went to local stores and played with the display models and all of them felt very light, flimsy, and cheap. Even the Cuisinart was featherweight and felt like it would fall apart at any moment.

I've always had good luck with Hamilton Beach products, so when I found this one online, I had a good feeling about it. I did some more research and found that this particular model is used in hotels all over the country. That seemed like a good sign. Commercial grade products are usually built to a higher standard than consumer grade stuff.

So I ordered it, and sure enough, it's a major step above the 4-cup machines made by the other manufacturers. Even though it's made mostly of plastic, it is heavy and stable and definitely won't tip over easily. The power cord is heavy grade and has a 3-prong plug. The on/off switch has a nice spring action and seems durable.

Due to the fact that these are made for hotel rooms, there are picture-based instructions in white ink on top of the coffeemaker. If you are very concerned about appearances, this might bother you. It doesn't bother me. The #1 thing I'm concerned about is how the coffee tastes... and with that in mind...

It tastes great! It's very hot, much hotter than my old Mr. Coffee. But the water isn't TOO hot, so you don't need to worry about it making the coffee bitter and over-extracted.

I only have two complaints, and they are relatively minor: when you're finished brewing coffee and you open the basket holder to remove the grounds and filter, a small amount of water falls out and splashes onto the warming plate and onto the counter. It's not a huge amount of water -- maybe a teaspoon -- but it does do this every time I brew coffee. Just something to be aware of; have a paper towel handy and it's not a problem. My other complaint is that there is no way of knowing how much water is in the reservoir. Usually they have a little window or some other indicator, but this unit doesn't have either. Mildly annoying, but not a huge issue and obviously doesn't affect the coffee itself.

All in all, I'm very pleased with this coffeemaker and would recommend it to anyone who is searching for a good quality 4-cup machine.

This 4 cup coffeemaker by Hamilton Beach has really come in handy here in my hotel room! I am on vacation; but yesterday I started to come down with a bug and today I used this to make myself several piping hot cups of herbal tea. It couldn't be any easier to use--the visual instructions on the top of the reservoir are very, very easy to understand although as one reviewer notes the instructions do give the coffeemaker that "hotel look" which may turn some people off.

If I want to make myself some coffee instead of tea, this little machine doss the job every bit as well. Fill the carafe up to the amount of hot water you want (there are markings on the carafe to indicate how many cups you'll get from filling it up to different levels) and just pour the water into the reservoir. Add the coffee filter and ground coffee into the basket in the middle of the coffeemaker; and you're ready to go. After you're finished you can remove the coffee filter and any remaining grounds by simply sliding the basket to one side and that's that! Although another reviewer writes that some water comes out when they do this, I haven't experienced any water spilling onto the counter when I use this. In addition, the auto-turn off feature is quite good. It should prevent this from being a fire hazard.

All in all, this is a fine little coffeemaker that lets you prepare a great cup of tea as well. I highly recommend it.

Just a simple well built machine - no bells or whistles here.
I bought it from sams club- it think it was less than back then.
since this is a review I feel obligated to point out a negative -My biggest complaint would have to be the on/off toggle switch -because the machine is such a light weight -you have to physically hold down the machine to toggle the switch- otherwise you end up pushing the entire machine across the counter and the switch will still not budge. so be prepared to use two hands every time you want to turn off or turn on the machine. other than that- not a bad machine for the price.
I would agree with some of the other posts about the swing filter holder being a bitch to put back on. definetly needs a little manipulation to put back on. but..it will last you forever.

We had a bit smaller version of this for years and LOVED it!! This one looks prettier but it is harder to use. We always steamed milk right in our mug before but with this one it is almost impossible to do because it immediately foams over and makes a huge mess. It does not adjust to steam/froth so you just get froth! It drives me crazy! I would rather have the other Capresso that is a bit smaller but worked great. If you never steam milk I suppose the espresso part works fine. I don't like it :(

Do not buy this. It is a worthless piece of junk. The carafe leaks coffee all over the counter. The auto shutoff is too short. I'd take it back, but I suspect they won't accept the pieces it's in now. Major mistake on my part, one I won't repeat. Don't buy this JUNK.

I got a Krups 4 cup coffee maker as a wedding gift, it lasted 15 years. After a couple cheap makers that lasted a year each, we thought we upgraded to this. Within 2 months the hot plate was rusting, now less than a year old, the hot plate has rusted through. For some reason, coffee doesn't all go into the pot. Some, just a little, runs down the side onto the hot plate. Unfortunately, it is enough to rust it. I also hate the way it pours. I now keep it over the sink, as some coffee always runs down the side and drips off the bottom when pouring. One star is a compliment, only because zero is not available.

I received this coffee maker as a Christmas gift in 2005 and has worked fine every day since then. It is often used twice a day. The coffee comes out hot and with a well brewed flavor. Some coffee makers do not heat the water enough to produce a good tasting cup of coffee but this one does. All coffee makers have quirks about their baskets especially when offering the pause and serve feature but this was not even a concern for me.

I bought this a few years back - maybe about 3-5 years ago. It still works well but I didn't use it daily, maybe 2-3 times a week at best. It has a plastic like filter inside (not metal) and worked fine. I would have to agree with other reviewers about how it drips when pouring ALL THE TIME! To avoid that, I had to pour really slowly - only then did it not drip. But again, for , I coudln't really expect anything more. Hey at least it still works and brews decent cup of coffee.

Oh another thing - since I've had it for a few years, after years of usage, the platic lid that's supposed to snap on doesn't really because of the steam during the brewing process. Just flimsy design, doesn't affect the coffee, though.

I've used this coffee maker every day for about seven years, not counting time away from home for vacations etc. Never once had a problem. I use reverse-osmosis water, which probably contributes to its longevity. Makes good coffee, clean-up is quick and easy. Just wish Delonghi made a six-cup model, because sometimes four just ain't enough.

I have used this coffee pot once for making hot spiced tea, and it worked well. I don't have a sense of the durability of it because I've just used it once. It heated the water well and poured nicely from the spigot. I wish it had a detachable power cord because cleaning it is a challenge.

Hi all,

This was our second or third 20-30+ cup coffee maker purchased in the past 3 years. We bought it last April from another online store (that was a mistake-- I should know better by now to always buy "from" Amazon directly).

We use our coffee makers simply to heat water for coffee presses and tea. We never use the percolator.

I liked the fact that this coffee maker actually heats the water up to boiling and then occasionally reheats it to boiling again. This is great for our purpose, but I imagine when percolating coffee that means your coffee will be recooked through the day if you leave it on.

The bad news was the primary heating element burned out after 6 months-- only the warmer now works.

I went to the Continental Electrics related website, followed their directions to contact Customer Service for a repair or return authorization but have never heard anything again from them.

When there are some awesome customer service people out there, evidently this IS NOT one of them.

I quit waiting and ordered a new machine directly from Amazon where I know I at least have 30 days to return if we don't like our newest addition.

UPDATE Nov. 29, 2009--- We never did hear from customer service on this. Gave up and threw it out, making a note to not purchase from this company again.

If I could give less than one star for this product, I would. I just received it and followed all directions that came with it. With all the typos, this 30+ years Admin really had a tough time getting through it without burning up herself, unlike the coffee pot. It's been plugged in for almost 2 hours and has not brewed any coffee. The number on the warranty card is no good. I e-mailed the address also included and expect no response. This company, and any other associated with it, get ZERO stars for product quality and customer service.

At first I was concerned about the narrow aperture for filling the reservoir but that has not been a problem. The unit is easy to operate and program. I did not need the instructions. I makes HOT coffee quickly. I like the timer feature that shows with a graphic timer how long the pot has been brewed. The Water filter seems a bit weak. I would guess it would filter out sand or seashells but honestly it couldn't be that effective.

You can easily spend more that two times the price and get a worse unit from another manufacturer.

I loved this at first...it performed very well and looked nice but after a short amount of time it wouldn't make my coffee unless I had it prepared for a full carafe. I can't choose to make less so I am left with junky coffee or more than I need. I don't want to just waste coffee so I'll need to buy another coffee maker :x I have had better results from cheaper coffee makers.

I've had this coffee pot for a few years and this morning it just died. Yesterday it brewed my coffee just fine and today- nothing. I tried unplugging it from the wall, refilling the water, and even giving it the old "Fonz" jukebox hit, but nothing worked. I probably won't buy this one again.

I've had this coffee maker for at least 5 years now, and it's great! My Mom has had all of the super fancy coffee makers, and she was over the other day and said "WOW, this coffee is GREAT!! Way better than the coffee at our house!" It's been working pretty solid; we make 1 to 2 pots almost every day. The only issue is that there is a plastic tube thing on the drip that can cause the water to back off; we just removed it and everything works great! If you just want a basic and reliable coffee maker you've found it!!
